ALIVE
Confirmed  alive — issued public statement March 1 forming a leadership council to  handle Khamenei's duties until successor elected. Elevated to SNSC  Secretary role following Shamkhani's death. Named as Israeli target but  survived. March 2: posted social media statement declaring 'We will not  negotiate with the United States' — in response to Trump's Atlantic  interview claim that Iran wanted to talk. Contradicts diplomatic signals  from Oman FM. Still active publicly.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Former President
Islamic Republic of Iran
ALIVE
CORRECTION  — ALIVE. Initial reports of his death from Iranian state media (ILNA)  and Xinhua were incorrect. Multiple sources confirmed on March 3, 2026:  Iran International (informed sources — "alive after assassination  attempt"), Anadolu Agency (close aide: "alive and unharmed"), China  Global Times (via India TV News: "alive and safe"), Times of Israel  citing ILNA close associate ("the news of his martyrdom is false"). His  residence in Narmak, Tehran was struck (strike s014) and 2 nearby  students were killed at Hedayat High School — but Ahmadinejad himself  survived. Wikipedia has also updated noting "later reports stated that  Ahmadinejad is alive."

Confirmed  active through March 1-2.

Hezbollah
ALIVE
Confirmed  alive as of March 4, 2026. Delivered televised speech Day 5 evening  declaring Hezbollah will "fight to the death and will not surrender."  Said Hezbollah fight is "not linked to any other battle" — meaning it  could continue beyond the Iran war. Confirmed Hezbollah adhered to 2024  ceasefire but Israel did not abide by provisions. Israeli Defense  Minister Israel Katz declared Qassem a "marked target for elimination"  on March 3. He became Hezbollah Secretary General following Hassan  Nasrallah assassination in 2024. Sources: Qassem public speech + NYT  (March 4, 2026).
Mojtaba Khamenei
Supreme Leader of Iran (elected March 4, 2026)
Islamic Republic of Iran
ALIVE
ELECTION  STATUS — CONTESTED/PENDING FORMAL VOTE. Iranian state TV (March 6, 2026  01:33 AM EST): leadership council (Pezeshkian, Mohseni Ejei, Arafi) met  to discuss how to hold Assembly of Experts meeting to formally elect  new supreme leader. AP: "provided no timeline on the selection."  Assembly has been meeting virtually after Qom compound was struck. This  CONTRADICTS earlier reports of Mojtaba being elected on March 4: Iran  International (informed sources), India Today, NDTV, and Wikipedia (4  citations) had reported election by Assembly under IRGC pressure on  March 4, 2026 — first dynastic succession in Islamic Republic history.  RECONCILIATION: It is possible the March 4 informal reports reflected  IRGC pressure/backroom selection that has not yet been formally ratified  by the Assembly. Israeli F-35 targeted his location Day 5. Israel  warned any new supreme leader following Khamenei ideology will be "an  unequivocal target for elimination." Trump: called Mojtaba  "unacceptable" and said he must "be involved in the appointment."  Sources: AP via Guardian Day 7 (01:43 AM EST March 6, 2026) + Iranian  state TV (IRIB).
Ahmad Vahidi
IRGC Commander (appointed March 6, 2026)
IRGC
ALIVE
Appointed  as new IRGC Commander-in-Chief on March 6, 2026 — replacing Mohammad  Pakpour who was killed on Day 1 (Feb 28). Al Jazeera (March 6, 2026):  "Vahidi has taken command of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps"  amid the US-Israeli war. Previously served as IRGC Deputy Chief  (appointed December 2025 by Khamenei) and before that as Deputy Chief of  Iran's Army. Extensive IRGC career: led the elite Quds Force 1988-1997  (handing command to Soleimani in 1998); served as Defence Minister under  Ahmadinejad; served as Interior Minister under Raisi (left 2024). Has  Interpol red notice for alleged role in 1994 AMIA Jewish center bombing  in Buenos Aires (85 killed). US and EU sanctioned for crackdown on Mahsa  Amini protests (2022). Described as "brutal" hardliner. Al Jazeera  analyst: "capable bureaucrat" and "key wartime leader." Iranian FM  Araghchi noted some IRGC units are now "somewhat isolated" and operating  on general orders — Vahidi's decentralized command experience may be  key. CONFIDENCE: HIGH — Al Jazeera primary article (March 6, 2026) + Al  Jazeera article listing confirmed appointment.

Iranian  President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on X: "Some countries have begun  mediation efforts.
